DNACPR discussions should not be seen as the aim of the discussion but should generally come at the end of a wider conversation about the patient’s condition and prognosis, where the aim is to reach a shared understanding about treatments that may or may not be helpful. Explain that you are trying to elicit their views on this sensitive matter, and whether these views are the same as the healthcare teams’ views. Many people have unrealistic expectations about the likely success and potential benefits of CPR, and members of the public often lack detailed understanding of what is involved.
For more tips on how to have these conversations, see our ACP page.
If you have any concerns about DNACPR discussions or about any legal aspects – speak to the palliative care team.
