Palliative Care Dumfries & Galloway

Specialist Palliative Care Services

In Dumfries and Galloway we have an integrated Specialist Palliative Care team operating across the region. The team works closely with other health and social care professionals in all settings where palliative care is provided. Referrals can be made at any stage following diagnosis of a life limiting illness. A palliative approach, and specialist palliative care, can complement treatment with life-prolonging therapies.

Acute Services

The Alexandra Unit is a Specialist Inpatient Unit (similar to a hospice inpatient unit) and is located within Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary in Ward B1.

Members of the palliative care team, including the hospital Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist, provide an advisory service to the other areas of the hospital.

Community

The community team has  Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialists supported by medical staff and other members of the Multi Disciplinary Team to provide an advisory service in the community.

Consultant Advice

Consultant in Palliative Medicine advice is available to hospital and community members of staff (not public) 24/7 via switchboard (01387 246246) – this is not for routine referrals. During the day on Saturday and Sunday there is a doctor available in DGRI.
