We all spend a significant proportion of our lives at work. Working in the NHS can be very rewarding, but also challenging. It is a great opportunity to be part of a fantastic team, making a real difference to peoples lives. However, it is important that we all work together to maintain a safe and enjoyable place to work. There are suggestions below for how to do this.
Dealing with people who are dying, or loved ones of those who have died suddenly, can add extra pressure. You may yourself be recently bereaved, or it may bring back memories from experiences in the past. The SAD website has information on resilience and wellbeing, particularly when dealing with death and dying. The most important thing is to talk to someone about how you are feeling.
TeamWork
Working in a team is a vital part of what we do every day, to provide the best quality patient care. This is particularly true in palliative care, where co-ordinated, multi-professional and often multi-agency working is essential. Think about how to support each other within your team , and also how you can improve interactions and support collaboration with others.
Consider incorporating a group activity into your handover once a week. Even 10 minutes playing a game or dancing helps!
To keep enjoying your job, you need to look after yourself. Know your limits, and value your time off..
If you are needing more help and support, speak to your manager, look at the advice on “dealing with stress and burnout“, or contact staff support services (contact details to the right).
